OUR NEIGHBOURHOOD - Lourens Street and surroundings
We are living in an underestimated area and a long established suburb called Humanshof or Haumannshof. It is a single residential area and also surrounded by some long established businesses.
The area is 0.11 km² in size with a population of 561 in 167 households.
We love the convenience of being close to the amenities of Somerset West and that our street has beautiful old trees. A majority of houses are occupied by owners and we are looking after each other in our close proximity.
Somerset West is a town in the Western Cape, South Africa. The piece of land known today as Somerset West was bought from local people and it was turned into a cattle post by Dutch soldiers in 1672. It was developed around the Lourens River and the farm Vergelegen. Organisationally and administratively it is included in the City of Cape Town metropolitan municipality as a suburb of the Helderberg region. Somerset West lies in the Helderberg Basin, surrounded by an amphitheatre of mountains, between the Cape Winelands and False Bay.
Our next-door neighbours are the Mealing Family. Kurt Mealing is the owner of Horizon Pools; THE manufacturer and installer of the largest and best quality range of fibreglass swimming pools Cape Town has to offer. They are well known in the industry for this fact.

Opposite us resides Philip Du Plessis, a born and bred Somerset Wester. Philip loves doing renovations and over the years did many renovations in Somerset West, Stellenbosch & Paarl. Several years ago Philip opened PRO PAINT.

Hottentots-Holland High School is an Afrikaans- and English-speaking school and was opened at its current site by Dr G. G. (Gawie) Cillie, Chairman of the School Board, in February, 1930. A portion of the land on which it now stands has been given by Mesdames Beynon and Osler, daughters of an early Somerset West shopkeeper and property owner. It was then known as Somerset West School, for primary and high school pupils. The school motto "Sibi Fidelis Ipsi" is Latin for "True To Oneself".

The Somerset West Night Shelter was established in 1988; at 71 Church Street on land leased from the City of Cape Town. The main building consists of male and female dormitories, with full bathrooms, a communal area for eating and entertainment and a kitchen.
The shelter provides secure overnight sleeping accommodation, an evening meal and breakfast and ablution facilities with warm showers. Social work services are given such as counselling, identity document applications, social grant applications, pension applications, liaising with other organisations such as old age homes, clinics and hospitals.

We would like to know more about the history and establishment of the suburb Humanshof because the area at the other side of the railway line has a deep history from the early settlements. The Somerset West Methodist Primary School is the oldest school in Helderberg area and it is closely linked to Methodist missionary efforts; which are believed to be formerly founded in 1842.
